SPACE – Supporting Performing Arts Circulation in Europe

Pilot Project for Artist Mobility

December 2008 – November 2011

Ten national cultural institutions with an international policy and practice created a new platform, dedicated to Support the Performing Arts Circulation in Europe: SPACE.

The members of SPACE share a position in between politics and the artistic field in their own countries, work as centres of information, promote the (performing) arts on a national and international level and are experienced in supporting and running European cultural projects.

They share the belief that one of the cornerstones of a European Cultural Policy is to facilitate the circulation of (performing) arts across Europe, and also realize there are still a lot of imbalances in this transnational arts sphere, between countries, regions, artists, disciplines and cultural operators.

The SPACE project’s objective is to give priority to the mobility of arts productions and to combine cultural mobility with cultural diversity, European citizenship and investing in emerging generations. Still a young initiative, SPACE will enlarge the network while implementing the different activities of the multi-layered project.

For the last training program in three year project, WRITERS ON THE MOVE, addressed to professional writers on performing arts (journalists, trainings, theoreticians), deadline extended to apply from November 7th to November 14th.

Aims of the training are to question the idea of mobility by investigating the way to look at foreign artworks, to rethink the position of Art Critic today in order to find new ways of thinking and writing about Art for a new public – as a way of »answering through practice«, to improve knowledge about international work in the performing arts and its questions in terms of aesthetics, new forms and genres.

Information and application forms at www.spaceproject.eu

Nida Art Colony or NAC is an interdisciplinary art, education & residency center. It is a new subdivision of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. It is developed under the EEA and Norway Grants support. The project started in 2009. NAC will open in February 2011.

The overall objective of the NAC project is to improve the quality of art and design education in Lithuania and to implement innovations in the field of art education by promoting international cooperation. By launching the Nida Artist-in-residence Programme NAC also aims to create favourable conditions for creative contemporary art practices.

The main forms of NAC activities are international workshops, summer schools, exhibitions, conferences, video screenings and the artistst-in-residence programme. In June, July and September the NAC will house summer workshops of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (these workshops constitute a part of the curriculum and are organised by the Academy‘s departments themselves). All other events are subject to planing.

Nida Art Colony is on the Curonian Spit, which is a peninsular dividing the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. In the year 2000, the Curonian Spit was included into the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most beautiful and unique cultural landscapes of Europe. The Curonian Spit is a National park with sand dunes and pitch pine forests as characteristic features of its landscape. Nida settlement is the administrative centre of Neringa. A century ago it had a high reputation within the artistic world: there was an active Art Colony established by German artists-expressionists in the 2nd half of the 19th century-the beginning of the 20th century. Artists like Max Pechstein and Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, writers like the Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann, composers and actors prized its landscape and ambience.

Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association (LTMKS) is an artist-run-organisation which has more than 60 members. It was established in 1998 and it continues the activities of “Metastudija” (artist-run-initiatve) which started in 1994 as an oposition to the gigantic Lithuanian Artists’ Association which had a lot of impact on Lithuanian art scene, however it was not flexible and inherited values from soviet art system. LTMKS is the biggest artist-run-organisation in Lithuania. Among its members are the most prominent Lithuanian contemporary artists working with various kinds of media: photography, video art, installations, performances, etc.

Since the beginning the LTMKS was a virtual organisation without any space. However starting from April, 2010 it moved to abandoned house in the very centre of Vilnius. It occupies the 3rd floor of the building, bearing a name “Fluxus ministry”. Around 20 artists are having studios and making open studio days. Moreover LTMKS is organising exhibitions, video screenings and other art events in the same building.

CCAE was established in 1992 as part of the Soros network, and has been operating as an independent foundation since 1999 primarily funded by the Estonian Ministry of Culture.

CCAE works on collaborative projects both with local and international partners. To get an overview of our most recent activities, click the newsletter True Guardian.

Our office on the 3rd floor of the Tallinn Art Hall is open for the following purposes in general:
a) to gather and disseminate information about contemporary art in Estonia
b) to help initiate projects both at home and abroad which would expand the presence of professional contemporary Estonian artists in the international arena
c) to provide project-based scholarships for local artists to exhibit abroad, and research-based scholarships for foreign curators to work here
d) to provide the impetus for (ex)change in local art critical discourse – to produce and distribute publications about contemporary visual art projects from Estonia
e) to host foreign curators, critics, art historians or artists in our office in order to expand exchanges and the international network
f) to act as the official representative of the Republic of Estonia at the international art exhibition La Biennale di Venezia

During the Soviet era Polymer was a toy factory. In 1994, the company closed this branch of activities, leaving a large building in a state of abandonment. A few years later, a group of artists, intrigued by this big empty space, decided to turn it into their studio space. Step-by- step, other artists and musicians joined wishing to use these spaces for creating, for rehearsing…

Nowadays the factory disposes of 3000sq m of space, dedicated to creation and dissemination. Retaining the original flair of the of the building, and keeping its authenticity, concrete production facilities have been transformed to incorporate new spaces for living, artist studios and an environment for alternative cultural events.

Polymer has evolved into a place for international artist residencies and the diffusion of ideas and energy. Within the walls of the building live together about 30 artists and organizations, working in diverse artistic fields. Constituted as a non profit organization, Polymer works as a platform and as a venue for different events and activities, offering a new space for alternative culture in Tallinn. Public events take place regularly, involving resident artists and guest artists, both Estonian and International.

Polymer is an organization involved in local life and open to the exterior. Polymer leads different cultural and social actions at a local level, and has developed partnerships in Tallinn, throughout Estonia and within Europe. Polymer is a member of Trans Europe Halles, a network founded in 1983 bringing together 40 independent culture centres in Europe.

Polymer International Artist in Residency program is developped in close cooperation with Art Container Gallery and Estonian Media Artists’ Union, both organizations having their workspace in Polymer.

MÄRZ is new initiative located in Tallinn old town, Olevimägi 7, which focuses on establishing a self-initiated, non-institutional open cultural project space in the center of Tallinn. It is an attempt to create a loose helping umbrella for cultural production and promotion in the capital city where the cultural life is highly institutionalized and tends to be restricted according to division of separate cultural fields. The project brings together people from different fields – art, architecture, urban studies, design, music, theater, contemporary dance, social sciences, gay, lesbian and queer activists, in order to foster creative collaboration and mutual exchange of ideas and information. The project space will work on the principle of seriality which enables bringing together very different agents, events and issues while retaining them their clearly distinguishable character.
